First settled in 1795, Derby is a sprawling, cosmopolitan metropolis built around a large natural harbour. It houses over one-third of Jarraban’s population and is the cultural and economic heart of the country, with most major local financial institutions and businesses headquartered within the Derby Town (CBD). Major suburbs include Carisbrook, Connaught, Croydon, Kensington, Longmore, Merchiston, Newport, St George, Torralla, Tredegarville and Woiyebba.

An ecletic combination of old and new, the city is highly multicultural and hosts the southern hemisphere’s largest Chinese New Year celebrations outside Sydney. Hunter Street in West Derby, known informally as "Saigon Street", is also a renowned Vietnamese enclave. Several notable Jarrabanian sporting events feature on the city’s calendar, including the Jarrabanian Rugby Premiership (JRP) Final, held at Harbour Park each October, and a prestigious horse race known as the Cornwall Cup. It hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1990.
