Cartographic Discussion

Post by Will » July 27th 2013, 11:51 am

Awaiting the appointment of the Cartographic Committee I have been working on some concepts for the new Union map.

So far I have drawn Western Europe onto the map.

I'd like to hear people's opinions on this format. The colour scheme? Level of detail? Anything you think is important.

I personally would like to add National Capitals to the map. Also are there any ideas for marking AIN member nations?

Love the colour scheme! Level of detail is amazing! :o
Maybe AIN member states could be a bright white?

I wouldn't mind national capitals marked out either, but for AIN member states only. :P

It looks very good! If you are going to do national capitals and have this on a global map, the scale would need to be very good to fit on national capitals. On this scale, it would be okay to add AIN national capitals.

I'm not sure what you could do to alter the colours to differentiate our countries. The grey of the RL countries might not work with the green we use at the moment.

Looks good, and would love to see the Nation Capitals added.

Only thing I'd suggest is that the maps need to be about twice that size so you get better details of the coast lines and the smaller nations aren't obscured by their Capitals and Nation names.

As for colours, a nice shade of pink or yellow might suit.

I'd also recommend a version with out nation names and one with, that way people can use them for flight routes and other kinds of uses with out having all the other world nations names listed.

Amazing map. :o I have no ideas to suggest (mainly because cartography is one of many things I suck at), and I love it as it is!

P.S. Someone should fix Portugal though. :P Remember guys, Portugal goes all the way down to the Gibraltar Strait.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Personally I dislike the green we use on the map, perhaps maybe a darker shade of grey could work?

Fox: The map I made that from is 8000 pixels wide, does that sound good? It will also be very easy with the file to turn off layers. You can have no borders, labels etc.

Thanks Emir, I just copied it from the current Union Map, I guess someone forgot to fix it after Fairview.

In order to jump-start this discussion now that the committee has been formed, let me offer the following links to various SVG-format Mercator maps:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Categ ... projection
This is a whole category full of Mercator maps, which is the projection we agreed to use when we passed the Alliance Cartography Act. It contains more than just SVG files, but I believe we should limit ourselves to only considering files in that format, since they'll be easier to modify to our liking.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File: ... ection.svg
This is a basic Mercator map with RL borders, from the above category. It turns small islands into dots, unfortunately, which we'd have to correct if we chose to base our map off this one.

Discuss away! :D

Yeah, I found the dotted map yesterday. Do you think we could remove the dots? Because I'd like to base it off that one. :)

I'm sure we can. We just need to find another Mercator map that has accurate versions of those islands and draw them onto our chosen base map.

I think we do indeed need to create our own chat on Skype x3

Me and will agreed that we will keep the dots but make them smaller in size, but only for AIN nations
